Meet a few of the fans tailgating in the Lambeau Field lot before Billy Joel’s concert on Saturday night.
» Tailgating setup: A charming bistro table for two with wine, cheese, olives and a cribbage board. Originally from Madison, it’s a date-night setup they perfected from the city’s Concerts on the Square.
» How many times they’ve seen him: Aaron saw him once at the Kohl Center in Madison with Elton John, but Sarah missed that tour stop with her sisters, so the Lambeau show was a must. “How often do you get to see an amazing concert at a historical place?” Aaron said. In two weeks, the Zitzelsbergers, who caught acts like Pink Floyd and U2 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison back in the day, are headed to Summerfest to see Paul Simon — another act on their concert bucket list.
» Favorite song: Aaron picks “The Downeaster ‘Alexa,’” but Sarah says it’s too hard to choose just one.
» How many times he’s seen him: Never. The last concert he’s been to was Led Zeppelin in Chicago when he was 19 — 40-some years ago.
» What brought him to Lambeau: His daughters, Elizabeth McDonald and Michelle Seguin, got him a ticket for Father’s Day. When they were kids, Larry worked a side job as a DJ and would let the girls help pick out the music, which often included Billy Joel songs.
» Why he’s a fan: “I grew up in the ’70s … When Billy Joel started, I was already old enough to listen to his songs and understand them.”
» Favorite song: His daughters will tell you “Piano Man” is their dad’s go-to karaoke song.
» Tailgating setup: A group of about 18 with two vehicles, including a pop-up camouflage tent in the back of a pickup with its own portable potty
» How many times she’s seen him: Once in Milwaukee with Elton John
» Why she’s a fan: “His songs have a lot of meaning. Because we grew up with him, I relate.”
» Favorite song: “Just the Way You Are.” “I sing that randomly at least once a week.”
» Tailgating setup: Cheese and crackers and bloody marys for a girls group of six
» How many times they’ve seen him: Ann saw him in Chicago with Elton John; first time for Amanda.
» Why they’re fans: “Growing up as a little girl my dad always played his records,” Amanda said
» Favorite song: “Just the Way You Are” for Amanda; “Only the Good Die Young” for Ann. “I did lose my dad when I was young so that song always stuck with me,” Ann said.
» Why they’re fans: “I grew up listening to him, and I know he’s quite a phenomenal musician,” Randy said. “This is (Lyra’s) first concert. I thought it was pretty cool for her to see Lambeau Field, too.” (Lyra, who plays piano by ear, turns 11 today.)
» Favorite songs: “Piano Man” and “The Longest Time” for Randy. Lyra said Joel’s music is still “kind of new” for her, but she brushed up by listening to it on the drive from Glenwood City.
